> Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Many men have gynecomastia -- enlarged, female-like breasts--causes by excess glandular tissue or fat (or both).

landular tissue must be cut out, usually through a small incision near the edge of the areola.

Fatty tissue can be removed by liposuction. A small, hollow tube is inserted through a tiny incision, leaving a nearly imperceptible scar.

Following surgery for gynecomastia, the patient has a more masculine chest contour.

Gynecomastia is the development of abnormal breast tissue on men, small or large, and normally on both sides. One out of three male American adults suffers from some degree of enlarged breast. Gynecomastia can cause feelings of embarrassment and awkwardness. For most men, the best solution to reduce and reshape their breast is by surgery.

Dr. Alfred Sofer a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Fairfield Connecticut offers this service in his practice.

Who is a candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
Surgery to correct gynecomastia can be performed on healthy, emotionally stable men of any age.  The best candidates for surgery have firm, elastic skin that will reshape to the body's new contours.

Prior to surgery, weight loss, diet and lifestyle changes, and other alterations are encouraged to ensure that all possible solutions have been considered.  Individuals who drink alcoholic beverages in excess, smoke to excess, or consume anabolic steroids are usually not considered good candidates for surgery since lifestyle alterations could readily alter excess fat and tissues in the chest area.  Therefore, patients are first directed to stop the use of these drugs or habits to see if breast fullness will diminish before surgery is considered an option.

What are the risks and complications of the procedure?
There are risks in any type of surgery. This type of breast reduction is no different. However, Dr. Sofer will meet with you to review all the risks and benefits prior to scheduling surgery.
During your in-depth discussion with Dr. Sofer he may recommend that you also conduct your own personal research. It is very important to fully understand the procedure before making a decision.
