6 Things You Need to Know About Mommy Makeover

One of the most transformative procedures I perform is the mommy makeover. At my Fairfield, CT, plastic surgery practice, I perform this procedure–which typically combines body contouring and breast enhancement–to help women regain their figures after having children.

I understand that the more you understand about your procedure, the more confident and comfortable you will be proceeding. In this post, I’ll let you know the 6 things that I believe all patients should be aware of before they undergo a mommy makeover.

  1. Do your research. Before you schedule your surgery, it is important to do research about not only the surgery itself but also your surgeon. The first thing you should look for is that your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Next, you should look into his or her educational background and training. Your surgeon should have years of experience performing mommy makeovers and specialized training in breast enhancement and body contouring. Lastly, take a look at the surgeon’s patient before-and-after photos. This can give you a good idea of the caliber of results you can expect.
  2. You must have a good support system. Make sure to ask a family member or close friend to assist you during the first few days of your recovery. A mommy makeover is an extensive procedure involving key muscle groups. You will not be able to walk fully upright for a few days, and lifting, reaching, or straining are out of the question. You will need help caring for your children if they are small, as well as meal preparation and household chores.
  3. Ideally, you should be done having children. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can take a toll on the body. This combination of procedures is meant to correct these changes, so if you plan on having another child, that correction could be reversed. However, we understand that life is sometimes unpredictable, and having another baby after your mommy makeover is perfectly safe. In such an instance, you may have to undergo a revision procedure to restore your results.
  4. Plan to take 2 weeks away from work. You will have multiple incisions, bruising, and swelling after your mommy makeover. We will prescribe pain medication to minimize your discomfort during this period, but rest is also key to your comfort and healing. Within 1 to 2 weeks, all sutures and drains will be removed, which will help improve your mobility. Most patients can return to work at this point. However, if you have a job that requires any strenuous activity, you may need more time off.
  5. Recovery requires preparation. Patients should gather all the supplies they need before their surgery date. This should include your prescription and over-the-counter medications, gel ice packs, compression garments, and medical supplies so you can go straight home after your procedure. It is also a good idea to stock up on nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods.
  6. Surgery can’t replace healthy living. It’s important to remember that a mommy makeover is not a weight loss procedure. You should be close to your goal weight before undergoing your procedure. A mommy makeover can help restore your pre-baby body, but health and fitness should still be priorities. I advise all my patients to eat a balanced diet and stay active to maintain their results.
