Answers and questions Tummy Tuck! Everything you need to know!

For some women after childbirth their abdomens don’t bounce back, and in fact the skin can seem sagging with fat and lose tissue, as the underline muscles separate, which add to the appearance of a “kangaroo pouch”.  This may not happen to every women and isn’t always noticeable after the first pregnancy, however, it can cause much discomfort and aggravation! It’s common to think it’s due to improper diet and lack of exercise leaving women feeling it’s their fault and they are doing something wrong! I’m here to tell you you are not doing anything wrong. IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT! This is a common result of childbirth. No matter how many crunches you do or how often you denied yourself of sweets, and food your tummy may have excess fat, with saggy skin and stretch marks that would require surgical repair. Sagging abdominal skin can happen to anyone who has experienced a significant weight loss and, therefore, their skin’s elasticity has lost its ability to return to it’s former shapely state.

If this is your concern, it can be repaired with a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty procedure.

Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

Good candidates for tummy tucks have some excess skin, loose muscle and may have some excess fat. This commonly occurs after pregnancy and good candidates will not want to get pregnant after the procedure so not to ruin the result. Ideal patients should be within 15% of their ideal body weight. Other good candidates are people who have had significant weight loss, either through diet and exercise, or from surgery.

Should you lose weight before the procedure?

Weight loss is useful, but not essential. In general, the closer you are to your ideal body weight, the better the result. Ideal patients should be within 15% of their ideal body weight.

Is a tummy tuck only for females post-pregnancy or can anyone get it?

Patients who undergo weight loss surgery (bariatrics) are often very good candidates for tummy tuck when their weight has been stabilized. Men are also great candidates for a tummy tuck, especially in cases of weight loss from diet and exercise or from surgery (bariatrics).

Is liposuction involved?

I often use Liposuction to remove excess fat and body sculpt for a natural shape and curve.

What type of anesthesia is used?

Tummy tuck surgery using general anesthesia.

How long is the procedure?

The length of surgery varies with the amount of surgery needed. Most cases take 2-4 hours.

Will a tummy tuck rid you of stretch marks?

In many cases a tummy tuck removes those stretch marks that are below the belly button. Stretch marks that are above the belly button are moved down so they will appear lower, but not removed.

Are there scars after the procedure?

Scars after surgery are permanent and are in lower abdomen just above the pubis. The length and appearance of the scar varies among patients. In general, scars fade with time.

Is a tummy tuck a permanent solution or will the skin lose its firmness over time?

Results from these procedures are permanent. However, if you gain/loss weight, get pregnant or have other abdominal surgery, you can adversely affect the result.

How long can you wait after pregnancy before it is too late for the procedure to work?

You should not undergo a tummy tuck after pregnancy until your body changes have stabilized from your pregnancy.

Are there any alternatives to a tummy tuck that are as effective without anesthesia?

Only a tummy tuck can remove excess skin, fat, and tighten muscle. A tummy tuck will flatten the tummy and narrow your waistline at the same time. Liposuction removes fat, but skin shrinkage after liposuction varies from patient to patient.

Cost of tummy tuck procedure?

Tummy tuck cost rang between $7000-$9000 depending on the amount of time in the operation room and anesthesia.
