The old saying caveat emptor — “let the buyer beware” — certainly applies when shopping for do-it-yourself tummy tuck treatments. In Connecticut, as elsewhere across the country, our patients can be susceptible to ploys from all sorts of products that promise to give them the flatter tummy they desire without surgery.
Unfortunately, these at-home tummy tuck products will do nothing but lighten your wallet.
The different products on the market fall into 3 distinct categories:
- Tummy tuck belts and binders: The so-called tummy tuck belt claims to gradually burn away belly fat, even without exercising. This and similar belts are different from binders or compression garments designed for tummy tuck patients to wear during their recovery, because those are meant to help reduce swelling. What’s more, even if these tummy tuck belts worked as promised, they miss the point. Fat reduction isn’t the goal of a tummy tuck: It is surgery to remove excess skin.
- Skin tightening creams: There is virtually no scientific evidence that these creams tighten skin, even skin that retains most of its elasticity. The abdominal skin targeted by tummy tuck surgery has already lost almost all of its elasticity (which is why surgery is needed).
- Nonsurgical treatments: Certain nonsurgical procedures, such as laser skin rejuvenation, can be excellent options for some cosmetic concerns. But the excess abdominal skin and abdominal muscles separated during pregnancy simply won’t respond to nonsurgical procedures.
The bottom line is that abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is the only true solution for women and men who want to restore a flatter, toned tummy after significant weight loss or pregnancy. A tummy tuck involves making an incision as low as possible, just above the pubic area, enabling me to remove excess skin and repair abdominal muscles (if necessary) with a scar that’s hidden below the bikini line. I do often combine liposuction with a tummy tuck to ensure the resulting contours look natural and sculpted.
It requires an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to get the type of results seen in these tummy tuck before-and-after photos of one of my patients:
