Why Winter Is the Best Time for Laser Hair Removal

Now that the colder winter months are officially here, it’s hard to think about sunbathing in your favorite bikini on your favorite Connecticut beach. Believe it or not, though, now is actually the best time to get beach-ready.

Whether you’re ready for smooth legs, flawless underarms, or an easy-maintenance bikini line,  Dr. Alfred Sofer considers winter one of the best times to get started with laser hair removal.

Let’s take a look at the reasons why the colder months are a better time to get started.

Why winter is the best time of year for laser hair removal

Now is the best time to get started with laser hair removal because:

Starting in winter gives you plenty of time to target hair during the growing phase

Laser hair removal works because the light energy damages the hair follicle (but not your skin), and once it’s damaged, new hair won’t regrow. There’s a catch though: This only works when your hair is in the growth phase, or anagen phase. The other two phases are called the regressing (catagen) phase and the resting phase (telogen).

To make sure that each hair follicle is treated during its growing phase, you’ll need about four to six laser hair-removal sessions spaced about six weeks apart. This means that you’ll need to start thinking now about scheduling your first laser hair removal session, so you’re beach-ready by the time summer rolls around.

It’s easier to hide hair growth in winter

Not only do you need to allow plenty of time to cycle through all of your laser hair removal sessions, but there’s another reason why winter is the best time for laser hair removal.

The laser needs to target your hair follicle, so you need to avoid any hair removal process that removes your follicle. If the follicle isn’t there, the laser can’t reach it! Avoid waxing, tweezing, bleaching, threading, epilators, and depilatory agents for about four weeks before your laser treatment.

If you’re normally a waxer, this means you might get a little hairy before your laser treatment, but that’s okay because the results are worth it! In winter, it’s easier to hide hair growth on your legs since you’ll likely wear pants or tights in the cold weather.

Starting now makes protecting your skin from UV exposure easier

Laser-treated skin is sensitive to ultraviolet rays, so it’s essential to protect your skin from it. No matter what time of the year you receive laser hair-removal treatments, you need to protect your skin after treatment, and scheduling your treatments in winter makes it easier to do so.

Protect any exposed skin by applying SPF daily. For example, you may need to apply a facial SPF if you have your upper lip treated, but if you’ve had your legs treated, you don’t need to fuss with SPF. Simply, wear pants! This, once again, is much easier to do in winter.
