Dermal Fillers Fairfield, CT and White Plains, NY

A dermal filler is an injectable treatment designed to resolve wrinkles and volumize areas of the face. Fillers are formulated to treat various areas of the face and last for a specific length of time. These injections do not just serve a cosmetic purpose- they support overall skin health by stimulating collagen production and hydrating from within

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Dr. Sofer offers FDA-approved Juvéderm and Restylane, biocompatible fillers formulated with hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that our skin produces naturally. In addition to the skin, HA is found in the joints, eyes, and other connective tissues to provide lubrication and moisture. Upon injection, it works to attract moisture to smooth out wrinkles and provide even volume.

Research has shown that each HA molecule is capable of binding to water around 1,000 times more than its own volume. (1) HA fillers do not simply mask the look of wrinkles, they provide the skin with the hydration it needs to maintain skin resilience and health, promoting more elasticity and softness. HA molecules also serve to induce collagen synthesis in the dermis through stretching and stimulating its fibroblast cells- the cells that produce collagen itself. This means it can not only treat minor wrinkles but can also resolve atrophic skin conditions, like acne scars. (2)

A benefit of HA fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane is that injectors can reverse the results if a patient is dissatisfied. By administering an enzyme injection of hyaluronidase, the HA filler will effectively break down immediately, leaving the skin exactly how it appeared before.

About Juvéderm and Restylane

Juvéderm and Restylane are specially designated to withstand movement in different areas of the face. They can reduce signs of aging and promote more youthful contours in the following ways:

  • Reducing lines around the nose and mouth, called nasolabial folds
  • Adding projection to the cheekbone, chin, and jawline
  • Plumping the lips
  • Smoothing out lip lines
  • Smoothing out superficial horizontal forehead lines
  • Providing subtle volume for under-eye hollows
  • Reducing the appearance of dark circles
  • Promoting quality hydration and an overall radiant appearance

What is the Difference Between Juvéderm and Restylane?

Since they are both HA fillers, there are only minor differences between the two. Restylane is more cohesive than Juvéderm, meaning that it tends to spread less, producing more defined results in a highly specific area. While this can be a major advantage for certain sunken areas of the face, particularly under-eye troughs, Restylane is often less moldable through gentle massage once it is injected. Depending on the formulation and your metabolism, Juvéderm can sustain results for 1 to 2 years. Restylane tends to last about 6 months in the lips and 1 year in other areas

Preparation

Before any injectable procedure, Dr. Sofer will review your current prescriptions and any regular supplements you take. He will advise you to refrain from taking blood thinners, as these can cause post-procedure bruising. This can include NSAIDs, aspirin, omega supplements, and certain herbal supplements. You should arrive at your injection appointment with clean, makeup-free skin. Dr. Sofer will further cleanse your face before the procedure.

Procedure Steps

If you are concerned about discomfort, Dr. Sofer will apply a topical numbing cream that will take at least 30 minutes to settle in and take effect. However, many patients find dermal filler injections highly tolerable because they contain lidocaine, an effective numbing agent. After cleansing and numbing, the injection procedure itself only takes about 15 minutes to complete. Dr. Sofer will inject the HA into the desired areas, gently massaging the skin to promote a more even spread throughout.

When Will I See the Results of Dermal Fillers?

After your treatment, you may experience redness, bruising, and temporary swelling at the injection sites. Immediately following the procedure, you can apply a cold compress to reduce these effects. Dr. Sofer will advise you to continue to avoid blood-thinning substances for the next few days. You should also refrain from overexerting yourself, sun exposure, makeup use, and alcoholic beverages until your side effects resolve completely.

Though hyaluronic acid fillers can regenerate collagen over time, their filling effects will produce immediate results

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Botox

Botox is another popular minimally invasive injectable that treats signs of aging. Unlike dermal fillers, Botox does not volumeize the skin, but it can smooth out wrinkles, particularly in the upper third of the face. Botox contains botulinum toxin, a protein that can alter muscle functioning by blocking the signals of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Dr. Sofer strategically administers Botox primarily in depressor facial muscles, causing them to temporarily relax and slightly elevate, resolving the overlying lines.

FAQ

How long is the recovery time after dermal filler injections?

One of the advantages of dermal filler treatments is that there is minimal downtime involved. Most patients can resume their daily activities immediately after the procedure. It is common to experience some temporary side effects, such as redness, swelling, bruising, and tenderness at the injection sites, but these effects typically subside within a few days.

Are fillers better than Botox?

Dermal fillers tend to last longer than Botox, and they have the ability to volumize and improve the contours of the face. Some fillers contain hyaluronic acid, and injectors can dissolve the results immediately if their patients happen to not like them. Botox is less versatile than dermal fillers but is still an effective solution for the prevention of permanent wrinkles that form from facial expressions.

Are dermal fillers painful?

Dermal fillers are injections, but many contain lidocaine to minimize discomfort. Injectors also administer them superficially into the skin, further reducing pricking sensations.

How long do dermal fillers last?

The amount of time it takes for the results to dissipate depends on the unique formulation and the patient’s metabolism. Usually, fillers last several months, with some formulations lasting as long as 2 years.

Can dermal fillers be used for non-surgical facelifts?

Yes, dermal fillers can be used strategically to achieve a non-surgical facelift effect. By targeting specific areas of the face, such as the cheeks, temples, and jawline, dermal fillers can restore volume and lift sagging skin. This approach can result in a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance without the need for invasive surgery.
