As we age, fat in the face continues to drop in certain areas, particularly the malar fat pad and the jowls. We use dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM® in our Fairfield, CT office to help minimize these age-related effects by restoring facial volume and fullness. They can also diminish certain facial lines, such as smile lines.

The Aging Face
The aging process causes the malar fat pads (triangular-shaped fibrous tissues located in the cheeks) to drop against the nasolabial fold ligaments. While a youthful face has almost no eyelid-cheek junction (i.e., the two do not touch), the fall of malar fat pad due to gravity causes the eyelid-cheek junction to become more pronounced and the nasolabial fold to crease.
The same occurs with the jowls. The drop of the jowls due to gravity and aging creates a less pronounced jawline and marionette lines, also referred to as laugh or smile lines.
Benefits of Dermal Fillers
Unlike BOTOX® Cosmetic, which inhibits facial muscles from contracting, dermal fillers enhance shallow contours in the malar fat pad area to minimize the eyelid-cheek junction. They can also be used along the jawline to camouflage jowls and create a smoother jawline.
Plastic Surgery Center of Fairfield also provides dermal fillers to:
- Soften facial creases and wrinkles
- Improve the tear trough region
- Plump up thin lips
- Improve the appearance of recessed scars
Types of Dermal Fillers
Our office offers both hyaluronic acid-based fillers and calcium hydroxyapatite-based fillers.
Hyaluronic Acid-Based Dermal Fillers
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your body that has now become one of the most popular kinds of injectable fillers. Fillers made with hyaluronic acid include JUVÉDERM, Restylane®, BELOTERO BALANCE®, and Perlane®. None of these is derived from animal sources.
When this type of gel is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity from normal aging. It also brings water to the surface of the skin to keep it looking fresh and supple.
Calcium Hydroxyapatite-Based Fillers
Calcium hydroxyapatite is the heaviest of facial dermal fillers. This mineral-like compound is found naturally in human bones, and is often used to add fullness to the cheeks and soften the jawline. Plastic Surgery Center of Fairfield offers RADIESSE® for those seeking this type of dermal filler.
- Restylane: $625/syringe
- Restylane® Silk & Restylane® Lyft: $650/syringe
- JUVÉDERM: $695/1-mL syringe
- RADIESSE: $595/.8-mL syringe
Poly-L-Lactic Acid Fillers
Sculptra® Aesthetic is an injectable filler made from biocompatible poly-L-lactic acid. This filler triggers a growth response in your skin, stimulating the production of new collagen for long-lasting results.
To help make your treatment affordable, we also accept CareCredit® financing.
Dermal Fillers at Plastic Surgery Center of Fairfield
Connecticut has enacted a law that requires a medical doctor to be present during medical spa treatments, including dermal filler injections. This law requires the name and specialty areas of any physician performing cosmetic medical procedures to be displayed in an obvious location in the office and on the website. This law was created to protect patient safety and help patients answer the following questions:
- What is the provider’s training experience?
- Does the medical spa have a backup plan? If so, how do they address complications?
- Are there hospital privileges if complications occur?
Rest assured that our practice adheres to Connecticut law, and that in the rare event of complications, we are fully prepared to handle any situation that may arise.
