What a Breast Revision Can (and Can’t) Fix

Breast augmentations are among the most popular cosmetic surgeries. In 2021 alone, over 364,000 women received one 一 a jump up from the 300,000 reported in 2018. Because these are some of the most coveted surgeries, it can be extremely frustrating when you’re disappointed with your new bosom. For some women, though, breast revisions become a necessity.

As with any revision type of surgery, breast revisions are best performed by experts who understand the complexities of a revision. Here at Alfred Sofer, MD, Dr. Alfred Sofer and our team are compassionate and knowledgeable when it comes to breast revisions. If you’re unhappy with your augmentation, we encourage you to visit us.

In the meantime, Dr. Sofer discusses what a breast revision can 一 and can’t 一fix.

Understanding what a breast revision can do

Simply put, a breast revision is a second surgery to replace your initial breast implants. There are many reasons why you might consider one, but here are some of the more common problems that a revision can fix.

You might consider a revision if:

  • You’re unhappy with your initial implant size (either too big or too small).
  • You’re dealing with an implant-related issue such as capsular contracture, a condition in which hardened scar tissue can cause pain or tenderness as well as misshapen breasts.
  • You’d like to change the type of implant you have.
  • Your implants are leaking.
  • Your implants have deflated and/or ruptured.
  • You’ve developed complications of contracture or an infection related to your breast implants.
  • The implants shifted out of their initial place.
  • Your breasts are misshapen, either because of symmastia or a double bubble deformity.

In other words, breast revision can fix issues related to the surgery itself (such as the placement of the wrong-sized implants during the initial surgery) or because of unpreventable complications, such as implant leaks. Implants can leak because of the natural aging of the implant or trauma, such as a car accident or an accidental needle poke during a biopsy.

Understanding the limitations of a breast revision

Although a breast revision can help in many ways, there are still some things that a breast revision simply can’t fix.

Breast revision can’t fix:

  • Breast issues unrelated to implants
  • Thin or photodamaged breast skin

If you’re unhappy with your breasts but don’t already have implants, then a breast revision isn’t right for you. That being said, Dr. Sofer can guide you with the procedures that can help you achieve your goals, such as breast enhancements

Should you consider a breast revision?

Each breast implant revision surgery is tailored to meet your needs. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all method for breast revision surgery. Breast revision can fix damaged implants, restore a symmetrical appearance, and boost your confidence, but most importantly, breast revisions help you address your specific concerns.

Because of the personalized nature of a revision, Dr. Sofer, a board-certified plastic surgeon who is well-trained and experienced in all types of breast surgery, listens to your goals and develops a surgical plan to help fix all your concerns.
