Open Your Eyes to Eyelid Surgery

If you’re tired of looking tired (even when you’re not tired!), then you may want to consider the benefits of eyelid surgery.  Eyelid surgery addresses wrinkly skin on your eyelids, bags under your eyes, and deep tear troughs 一 and it’s available at our Fairfield, Connecticut practice.

In this article,  Alfred Sofer, MD highlights the benefits of eyelid surgery and how it can help you achieve a more youthful appearance.

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is primarily a cosmetic surgery that can be performed on the upper eyelids and/or the lower eyelids. During eyelid surgery, Dr. Sofer makes small, precise incisions to remove excess skin. Depending on your needs, he may also reposition fat and tissue.

Why consider eyelid surgery

Because the skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate, signs of aging appear faster here than in other areas of your body. Aging can contribute to the loss of elasticity, which then causes the skin around your eyes to sag and droop. Bags around your eyes can make you look angry, sad, or tired, even if you’re well-rested and happy. Eyelid surgery counteracts these unwanted signs of aging.

You might consider eyelid surgery if:

  • Your lower eyelids have saggy skin
  • Your under-eye area is puffy
  • You have deep troughs under your eyes
  • Your  peripheral vision is affected by excess skin
  • You appear tired when you’re not

The goal of blepharoplasty is to create a smooth contour from your lower lash line down to your midface. If needed, you can add volume to your cheek area with fillers to complete the smooth transition from your eyelids to your cheeks.

In other words, eyelid surgery restores a youthful appearance while improving your vision (if excess skin affects your peripheral vision).

Benefits of eyelid surgery

After blepharoplasty, your upper eyelids appear more open and alert, while your lower eyelids look more refreshed and taut. Together, these changes make a dramatic difference in your overall appearance. There are other advantages to eyelid surgery. They include:

  • Offers relatively quick procedure (anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours)
  • Provides faster recovery compared to other cosmetic surgeries (return to normal activities in about two weeks)
  • Removes excess tissue  and fat
  • Boosts self-confidence

Dr. Sofer knows that each person is unique and has different aesthetic goals. During your one-to-one consultation, he reviews your goals with your and outlines your customized surgical plan.

Combing eyelid surgery with other procedures

Perhaps one of the most alluring advantages of eyelid surgery is that it can be combined with other procedures, including a facelift. You may choose to receive multiple procedures at once if you want to combat signs of aging in a few places on your face. For example, if you have jowls as well as bags under your eyes, you might consider a facelift plus eyelid surgery. A  facelift will correct the jowls and wrinkles on the cheeks and neck, while eyelid surgery addresses the sagging and drooping around your eyes.
