Am I Too Old for a Breast Lift?

Are you too old for a breast lift? According to the  American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the data say  not necessarily. Of all of the women who received breast lifts in 2017, over half (52.5%) were between the age of 35 and 50, and 24% were between 50 and 64.

In fact, aging (and the sagging breasts that occur as a result of aging) may be  the reason you seek out a breast lift. As a board-certified plastic surgeon,  Alfred Sofer, MD understands that there are many reasons why surgery might not be right for you, but your age doesn’t necessarily have to be the reason why.

Below, he explains how a breast lift over 40 can help you achieve more youthful, rejuvenated breasts.

1. You don’t have to worry about pregnancy or breastfeeding

Pregnancy and breastfeeding dramatically change the size and shape of your breasts. Many women (even if they don’t breastfeed) note their breasts are saggier and droopier after having children.

Breast lifts after your childrearing years can give you the results you want — without the threat of a future pregnancy undoing them.

2. Breast lifts restore a youthful appearance

Not to be confused with a breast augmentation, a breast lift “lifts” your breast, which creates a more youthful appearance. You can receive augmentations and lifts at the same time. Breast lifts can improve the shape of your breasts as well as address issues such as droopiness, unflattering shape, nipples that point downwards, uneven breasts, and breasts with very large areolas.

3. Scheduling time off might be easier

Whether you’re 30, 40, or 50, receiving a breast lift requires some downtime. You’ll need to clear your schedule to rest, recover, and allow your body to heal. Recoveries can vary, but you can expect to need a  few weeks before you’re back to your normal routine. Older women (without young toddlers) may have an easier time scheduling downtime.

Are you a candidate for a breast lift?

Your overall health, expectations of surgery, and personal health history are more important than age when determining eligibility for plastic surgery. Regardless of your age, a plastic surgery (including a breast lift) might be right for you if:

  • You’re in good overall health
  • You maintain a consistent weight
  • You have realistic expectations for the procedure

Additionally, the ideal candidate shouldn’t smoke. You shouldn’t smoke prior to any surgery, but it’s even more important to quit before plastic surgery. According to the  American Society of Plastic Surgeons, smoking can cause loss of skin cells on your nipples, delayed wound healing, increased pain, and an increased risk of infections.
