Understanding the Different Types of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can reduce the appearance of wrinkles,  add volume to your lips, enhance shallow facial contours, reduce the presence of scars, and soften facial creases. In short, they can restore a youthful appearance. But which dermal filler is best for you? Dermal fillers vary by brand, active ingredient, and the desired cosmetic effect.

During your personalized 1:1 consultation,  Alfred Sofer, MD and  Gabrielle Pino PA-C, a RealSelf Most Loved Injector, can review your aesthetic goals and recommend the right  dermal fillers for you.

In the meantime, you can learn more about the different types of dermal fillers below.

Types of dermal fillers

We offer several types of dermal fillers, including hyaluronic acid-based fillers, poly-L-lactic acid-based fillers, and calcium hydroxylapatite-based fillers here in our medspa in Fairfield, Connecticut. We also offer other types of injectable treatments, including Botox®, Dysport®, and  SELPHYL® PRP injections, so even if dermal fillers aren’t right for you, we can recommend another type of treatment.

Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers

Your body naturally produces hyaluronic acid. It’s responsible for keeping your skin supple and soft, but unfortunately, hyaluronic acid production slows down as you age. Fillers made with hyaluronic acid help to restore lost facial volume and support hydration in your skin.

JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, BELOTERO BALANCE®, and Perlane® are just a few examples of dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid. Depending on which line of filler you choose, these fillers can:

  • Plump your lips
  • Reduce marionette lines
  • Reduce the appearance of acne scars
  • Restore volume in your cheeks

Even within each line of fillers, there are several options. For example, the JUVÉDERM collection contains:

  • JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC and JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC
  • JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC
  • JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE™ XC

Although all of these fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, they’re all used to address different cosmetic concerns. For example, VOLUMA XC is intended to correct age-related volume loss in the cheeks, while VOLBELLA XC is intended to augment lips.

Calcium hydroxylapatite-based fillers

Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral-like compound naturally found in bones. Fillers made from calcium hydroxylapatite are often used to treat:

  • Moderate-to-severe creases (including frown lines, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines)
  • Loss of fullness in the cheeks

RADIESSE® is also the first calcium hydroxylapatite filler to  restore volume to the tops of hands, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Poly-l-lactic acid fillers

Poly-l-lactic acid fillers are synthetic fillers known as biostimulatory fillers because they trigger collagen production. Sculptra® Aesthetic is an injectable dermal filler made from poly-L-lactic acid. Because this filler works by encouraging your body to produce more collagen, you won’t see immediate results, but once collagen production ramps up, results are long-lasting 一 often more than  two years! These fillers can be used to treat problem areas on the lower half of your face. Poly-l-lactic acid fillers can:

  • Reduce the appearance of laugh lines
  • Plump up thin lips
  • Improve deep nasolabial folds

Not sure which type of filler is right for you? You won’t have to make this decision alone.
